What if my home has more than one floor?

Robot vacuums are brilliant at moving around one level, but stairs remain a hard boundary. In a two- or three-storey home, the important questions are how many maps the robot can remember, what happens when you carry it to another floor, and which dock functions you lose while it is away from base.

The useful versionThe normal setup is simple: keep the dock on the busiest floor, carry the robot to the other levels, and use saved maps so it knows where it is.

What actually matters

A robot vacuum cannot move itself between storeys. Many models can remember more than one floor map, so you can carry the robot upstairs and let it recognise that level, but the dock normally stays on one floor. That means self-emptying, mop washing, water refill and charging are only fully automatic where the dock is available.

  • Multi-floor mapping can let the robot remember separate layouts, rooms, no-go zones and cleaning preferences for different storeys.
  • You still need to carry the robot between floors; it cannot climb stairs and should rely on its cliff sensing to stay away from stair edges.
  • On a floor without the main dock, expect more manual involvement — especially emptying, mop cleaning/refill and charging — unless that model supports an additional compatible station.
  • If you clean several levels frequently, robot weight, a convenient carrying point and how easily it resumes the correct map become meaningful ownership details.
