Context matters

Do not read the human comparisons too literally

The robot times are eye-catching, but they are not ratified human athletics records. The stronger evidence is robot-to-robot progress: the winning 100m fell from 21.50 seconds in 2025 to 8.64 seconds in 2026.

The standing high-jump comparison needs even more care: the robot event is a stationary two-foot vertical jump, not the same event as the human running high jump.

Why the housework events mattered more

The useful tests looked much less spectacular

Running shows balance and control. Household usefulness depends on manipulation, sequencing, autonomy and recovery when the environment is messy.

HousekeepingFold, tidy, store, hangHousehold-task events moved beyond walking into ordered, multi-step work.

These are the basic skills a useful home humanoid will need: seeing the task, gripping objects, using both hands together and completing the steps in the right order.

DexterityBean picking, screws and nailsSmall-object control is a stronger home signal than another headline sprint.

Picking up and placing small objects tells us more about future household usefulness than a fast sprint.

AutonomyRemote control was worth lessRobots scored better when they completed tasks on their own.

In some events, runs completed by remote control received only half credit. That makes autonomy visible in the result rather than hiding human help behind the performance.

Safety realityFast is not enoughA home robot must stop, recover and work around people as reliably as it moves.

The programme also included emergency-response scenarios. For a robot that will share a home, the follow-on question is what happens safely when a task goes wrong.

Running fast is not the same as being useful at home

For a robot that will live in a home, the useful questions are simpler: can it finish the task itself, recover when something goes wrong, stay safe, protect privacy and repeat the job reliably?

The bigger takeaway

Specialist robots such as vacuums may coexist with humanoids for years. A general-purpose body remains expensive, while repetitive household jobs are still difficult enough that specialist machines can be the efficient choice.
